Nik Spohr

Born and raised in Milton, Nik holds degrees from the University of Guelph (BA Political Science), Queen’s University (MA Political Studies), and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Studies at York. For the past five years Spohr has been employed with Gordon Food Service in Milton as he completes his education. He has been a long-time member of the NDP serving as the local youth representative, and currently feels the needs of the community are not being met. Spohr says “I am not a New Democrat running in the local constituency; I am an individual from the community who happens to be running under the orange banner. All of us in the campaign must put ourselves forward as representatives of the community- not as members of any particular party.”
Spohr kicked off the campaign with a promise to fight growing economic insecurities, by tackling rising gas prices, the unfair HST on home heating costs and job instability. Spohr says, “The rules have changed, yet so many of us are still playing by the old ones. A small group of economic “haves” are making record profits- they’ve been allowed to hand-craft legislation and have it rubber-stamped by the Government. Young families struggle to make it work. They bought into the system that promised a certain standard of living. Despite doing everything right, playing by the rules, we’re increasingly finding ourselves face to face with an environment that has little room for a good life.”
Spohr noted how the recently released NDP platform pointed to smart and practical solutions, which aim to make life more affordable. Nik is eager to discuss the concerns of the community face to face and has started knocking on doors, “I am excited to get down to business with voters. I am entirely open and accessible anytime community members wish to talk about what I would do for Halton at Queen’s Park.”
