Pat Heroux selected to be Halton candidate.
Tuesday Sept. 29, 2009
Long standing Halton New Democrat executive member Pat Heroux
has been selected to be our Federal candidate. Her nomination
was uncontested at a meeting held this evening in Milton.
"I've been a resident in Halton
since I was young. I know this riding, I know the people and
I know the issues that are important to Halton. I went to
high school here in Milton and I've seen some real changes
especially with the growth that we've seen in the last few
years," says Pat.
Pat Heroux is a retired mother of 5, grandmother
to 8.
Pat ran as the New Democratic candidate in the 2007 Provincial
election. She has been very active in the Ontario Public Service
Employees Union both at the local and provincial levels. She
is a past chair of the Halton area council for OPSEU and past
vice chair of the Provincial Committee for long term care
workers. She has also been an active member of the Oakville
and District Labour Council, sitting on several committees.
In the community she was a vice chair of the Halton Legal
Clinic and sat on the Milton United Way. She has always been
active in Human and Women’s rights.
In politics she would like to see true electoral reform, better
coverage for the disabled and better medical coverage for
seniors. Pat is a long standing member of the Halton NDP Riding
Association Executive, serving most recently as the Women’s
Representative.
Seniors are a special interest to Pat since she worked as
a Health Care Aide for over 30 years, caring for seniors at
Allendale in Milton.
At Allendale Pat was President of OPSEU Local 261 as well
as Treasurer and Secretary. She feels that all this has been
great preparation for politics and would like to be elected
to represent the people in Halton on behalf of the NDP.

The next federal election could happen at any time. The New
Democratic Party of Canada is prepared. There will be an NDP
candidate in every riding across the country. Unlike other
parties, the NDP is also committed to democratically electing
their candidates from among the many hard working activists
within the riding. In Halton we have a prospective candidate
that is ready to take our message to the street and stand
for what we all believe in, better public health care, clean
air, water and land, economic security, accessible education,
equality for women, dignity for seniors, justice for Aboriginal
Canadians and accountability in government.
To date there is one prospective candidate, Pat Heroux. Nominations
are open until September 22.
IMPORTANT: All Candidates for Nomination must read, agree
to uphold, and sign the Declaration of Candidate Responsibilities,
the Candidate’s Declaration, and Candidate’s Disclosure.
These documents must be received by the Federal NDP office
at least 7 days prior to the riding nomination for a candidate’s
name to be placed into nomination. Prospective candidates
may not run from the floor.
All members of the NDP living within the boundaries of Halton
are entitled to vote. Members who were in good standing last
year but have not yet renewed their membership for 2009 may
do so at registration and vote at the meeting. Before voting
begins each prospective candidate will give a prepared speech
and then all will answer questions from members. Balloting
will continue until one candidate receives a majority (over
50%) of votes.Following the Nomination meeting we will hold
a General Meeting to elect the riding executive.
